Football Futures Coach Rodrigues Niyongere Nominated for 2026 WA Young Australian of the Year Award

Football Futures Foundation is proud to celebrate community coach and aspiring CommBank Pararoos, Rodrigues Niyongere, who has been nominated for the 2026 Western Australian Young Australian of the Year Award.

Born with cerebral palsy and migrating from Burundi as a child, Rodrigues has turned challenge into purpose. Through his work with Football Futures Foundation, he uses the power of football to create belonging, build confidence, and inspire hope among children and young people at risk of social exclusion.

“Football gave me a chance to belong, to dream, and to grow,” Rodrigues said. “Now I want to give that same chance to others.”

As a coach and mentor, Rodrigues works closely with participants of all abilities, ensuring everyone feels valued, capable, and proud of who they are. His leadership shows that barriers can become bridges—and that football can be more than a game; it can be a pathway to inclusion and opportunity.

Rodrigues’ impact has already been recognised through the Football West David Cantoni Award for Excellence (2024) and the City of Bayswater Young Citizen of the Year (2025). As a Para-footballer, he has also proudly represented Western Australia at national championships.

Football Futures Foundation has played a pivotal role in Rodrigues’ journey—providing mentorship, a safe and inclusive environment to grow, and a platform to lead by example. Through the Foundation, Rodrigues has found not only a workplace but a community where his lived experience, talent, and heart for inclusion are celebrated.

“Rodrigues embodies everything we stand for,” said Football Futures CEO, Michael Kerr. “He shows our young participants what’s possible when you’re given belief, opportunity, and support. We’re incredibly proud to see him recognised for the positive change he’s making in our community.”

From the football pitch to the broader community, Rodrigues continues to champion inclusion, belonging, and empowerment—showing that the game can change lives, starting with one inspiring young leader at a time.
